What's Been Happening
I just got back in town, so let's see what's been happening:
1) The Brewers are on fire!
2) The Pirates are not.
3) I can't wait to hear an impassioned defense of Jason Isringhausen, on how loading the bases and giving up a grand slam was all part of his master strategy. It was because he thought his "out" was Matt Murton.
My theory on Isringhausen is that he is terrible, but because he only pitches for 3 out increments, it seldom catches up with him. He can only keep about half of the batters he faces off of base, but usually that still allows him to escape with a save [which is a meaningless stat that needs to be redefined if it will ever hold any value]. I think that perhaps the Cardinals have tempted fate by housing both Izzy and Looper, though. They are cut from the same cloth. In the past, Izzy digs a hole, but mostly seems to get out. Same with Looper. Together, however, I think they have pushed the universe too far. It will not stand for it any longer.
Prediction: Cardinal bullpen woes continue throughout season, and LaRussa places blame squarely on the shoulders of staff fall-guy Jason Marquis.
